WORLD FIREFIGHTERS GAMES
25 April, 2008

The World Firefighters Games 2008 message is spreading far and wide and this time it’s reaching for the sky, quite literally – SKY TV that is!!

Between now and when the Games take place in August, the official WFG08 Games DVD and other promotional material to publicise the event will be screened on a regular basis on Sky’s Open Culture Channel 167.

The debut screening will take place on MONDAY, APRIL 28, between 8pm and 9pm, and will initially run for two consecutive weeks, with regular slots to follow.

The six-minute professional DVD gives a real taster of just what competitors and spectators can expect during the Games. Organisers are expecting 5,000 firefighters from around the globe to compete in 73 sporting and unique events in 43 venues across Liverpool and the North West – making it one of the biggest events of 2008.

The Open Culture channel, which is European-wide, was launched in March and is regularly attracting up to two million viewers per week. Its main aim is to give Merseyside communities the opportunity to promote their events and submit footage to be seen on screen by a local, national and European audience.

Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service is extremely proud to be hosting the 10th World Firefighters Games as its contribution towards the city’s European Capital of Culture celebrations. The Games take place between August 24 and September 2, 2008, with the new waterfront Echo Arena being transformed into the ‘Official Games Village’ for the duration of the 10 days.

WFG08 General Manager Dave Robinson said: “This is an exciting step for us and we are thrilled to be working with the Open Culture channel on this project, it’s an excellent way of spreading the word about the World Firefighters Games 2008.

“This is an ideal platform to reach potential competitors, attract volunteers and get key messages across to a large audience. So switch-on and find out what the Games are all about – you won’t be disappointed!”

Jo Harrison, Open Culture 167 Co-ordinator, added: “The World Firefighters Games is a huge event and a perfect example of how we can help organisations. We are delighted to be supporting the Games and are looking forward to playing our part in promoting WFG08.”
