FREE watersports taster sessions are being offered to Merseyside residents.
The initiative is being launched as part of the WFG08 Community Engagement programme of the World Firefighters Games 2008, which takes place in Liverpool this summer.
WFG08 is working in partnership with Queens Dock-based Merseysport Centre to help deliver a series of FREE watersports taster sessions covering the activities of sailing, windsurfing and canoeing. The scheme will run between April and August this year and is open to people aged eight and over, though you must be physically fit to take part.
WFG08 Community Engagement Manager Essie Li commented: “Creating lasting legacies is a major part of the 2008 World Firefighters Games, and schemes such as our partnership with Merseysport is a great way of introducing people to new sports which may improve their health and well-being.
“Health is now high on people’s agendas, whatever their age, so I would encourage everyone to take advantage of these FREE taster sessions and try a new activity.”
Taster sessions last one hour and include an induction. The first dates released are April 16 and 23, with sessions starting at 2.15pm and 3.30pm. All equipment will be provided. Further dates are available but please note that times vary.
Bookings are being taken one week in advance of each taster session, call Merseysport Centre on 0151 708 9322. Participants who successfully finish the session will be entered into a draw to WIN 10 accredited training opportunities.
Taster sessions for people with physical disabilities are due to take place during July and August. Details will be announced on www.wfg08.com very soon.
The watersports scheme is just one of 12 WFG08 Community Engagement projects taking place across Merseyside. Others include free taster sessions in extreme sports such as skateboarding and rollerblading, assisting with tandem bike rides and guided walks for the visually impaired, and firefighters delivering rugby coaching in Merseyside schools.
Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service is extremely proud to be hosting the 10th World Firefighters Games as its contribution towards the city’s European Capital of Culture celebrations. The Games will take place in and around the city between August 24 and September 2, 2008, with the new waterfront Echo Arena becoming the ‘Official Games Village’ for the duration of the 10 days.
Organisers are expecting 5,000 firefighters from around the globe to compete in 73 sporting and unique events in 43 venues across Liverpool and the North West.
Merseysport Centre will be the base for a selection of WFG08’s watersports events, including lake rowing, dragon boat racing, open water swimming and the flat water canoe race.

The World Firefighters Games 2008 has sparked excitement within the business community on a national level.
