Toughest Young Firefighter Alive (TYFA)

| Pre-competition meeting: Briefing session on 29th August 2008 at the venue; Practice area available on 29th and 30th. Equipment and Requirements: The TYFA is comprised of four consecutive events. Each competitor will have one attempt at each stage. Failure to complete a stage will result in a time penalty, but competitors will be able to continue. You will only be eligible to qualify for a medal if you complete all four stages in full. The Host will supply all equipment. Competitors will be able to wear running shoes (no spikes) and athletic gear (shorts and top) as well as fire fighting equipment. Each event will run at 10 minute intervals. For example, a competitor who starts event 1 at 0900 hrs will start event 2 at 0910hrs; event 3 at 0920hrs and event 4 at 0930hrs. Competitors will start two at a time. Competitors must be ready to move onto the next event within the allotted time. If they are not they will be stopped by officials, given a time penalty and the option of carrying on. The cumulative time will be added together for the four events to give an overall time. Medals will be awarded for 1st 2nd and 3rd in each category. There will be a team event (team consists of 5 people any age any gender) the total times of all individuals will be added together to provide a team time. | Dress: Helmet, fire tunic, breathing apparatus set, gloves (optional). Equipment: 6 lengths of 25m x 70mm hose (weight 14kg each length) and 2 x Branch (weight 2.7kg each) Each line of hose consists of 2 x 25m lengths of 70mm hose, with British Standard instantaneous couplings (approximate length of hose lines are 50m) | |||||||
| Competition: Run 10m to fire appliance, then couple (2) lengths of hose to pump outlets. Pick up branches and extend the two lines of hose to their full extension (line to mark the finish). Put down branches. Hose lines can be moved one at a time. Run 20m to two further lines of hose (each consisting of 1 length of 70mm hose). Roll up the 2 x 70mm lengths of hose. Carry the two lengths of hose 10m and place in the designated area/boxes. Run 10m to finish. Time taken as you cross line. Time penalty for failure to complete all of event: 3 minutes Event 2: Obstacle Course Dress: Helmet, fire tunic, gloves (optional) Equipment: Sledge hammer – weight 3kg. Hammer box – 900mm inside top to bottom (bottom plate 300mm of ground) Foam Drum (– weight 10kg. Tunnel – 1.2m diameter x 10m long. Dummy – 40kg with harness. Wall – 4m high x 2.4m wide x 1.8m deep (across the top). Hanging rope (knotted) 38mm circumference (approx.) Competition: Run 10m from start line to hammer box, pick up hammer and hit inside of box 25 times. Note – one hit consists of hitting both the top and bottom of the box inside. Put down the hammer. Run 20m and pick up the foam container (weight approx 10kg). Run 10m to the tunnel and through the tunnel. Run 10m to marker cone. Run around cone and back through tunnel to start position. Return container to its original position. Run, following the Marshal to the start of the dummy lift. Lift or drag the dummy 45m to the marker/cone, around the marker cone and place back in its original position. The dummy will weigh 40kg approx and will be in a supported position, so competitor can pick up dummy on shoulders. Run 100m to a wall (4m) and climb over using rope, if needed. Drop from top of wall onto crash mat and sprint 10m to finish line. Time is taken at this point. Time penalty for non completion of any part of event 5 minutes Event 3: Tower Dress: Helmet, fire tunic, gloves, breathing apparatus set. Equipment: Triple extension ladder; 2x 10kg Foam containers –. Rescue line – 38mm circumference. 1 length of 70mm hose; Ground monitor and branch. Tower – 8.5m high with scissor stairs and landings. Competition: Run 10m and pick up ladder Pitch ladder to side of the tower Extend top section 3 rounds, then extend middle section 3 rounds Run 20m around marker/cone and 20m back to the other side of the tower. Pick up the 2 foam containers and climb the tower, using the stairs until reaching the top. Place the foam containers in the designated area. Using the rope, raise the 1 length of hose to the landing. Pick up the foam containers and using the stairs, descend to the ground and place down the containers in the designated area. Run 10m to the ground monitor and attach the branch. Run 10m and cross the finish line. Time penalty for non completion of any part of the event 3 minutes Event 4: Stair Climb/ Shuttle Run Venue: (site to be confirmed) Dress: Helmet, fire tunic, breathing apparatus. Competition: The stair climb will consist of a simulated stair climb using a stair climbing machine or will be up a multi storey building (height/distance to be confirmed) For further information please see the website at www.wfg08.com Bracketing: Medals will be awarded to the 3 fastest times in each of the categories listed below.
